Suspect in custody following fiery standoff near Las Vegas Strip
A suspect has been apprehended by Las Vegas police following a tense standoff during the busy rush hour traffic on Wednesday afternoon. According to authorities, officers initially tried to pull over a suspicious vehicle near Winnick Avenue around 3:30 p.m. The driver, however, began driving recklessly, even resorting to driving on sidewalks during the ensuing chase.
Despite the heavy traffic in the area, exacerbated by multiple events taking place in town that week, there have been no reported injuries so far, as confirmed by the police.
Video footage captured by FOX5 and the Nevada Regional Transportation Commission cameras depicted over 20 patrol units actively engaged in the chase-turned-standoff. The scene caused significant delays, with traffic coming to a standstill on Las Vegas Boulevard, as reported by FOX5's Drew Andre while en route to the location.
Law enforcement officials announced the closure of roads at Flamingo and Koval in the eastbound lanes toward University Center Drive, adding to the traffic congestion.
At approximately 4:45 p.m., the suspect's vehicle caught fire. It remains unclear whether the fire was intentionally started or resulted from a collision. FOX5 photographers captured images showing what appeared to be an LVMPD motorcycle and patrol unit colliding with the front bumper of the black car.
Fire crews promptly extinguished the flames once police entered the scene to apprehend the suspect.
A person seen in witness videos sent to FOX5 was seen being pulled out of the smoke-filled vehicle and later taken into custody by officers. The condition of the suspect after the fire has not been disclosed by the police.
As of 8:30 p.m., all road closures in the vicinity have been fully reopened, relieving the traffic congestion that had plagued the area.
The Las Vegas police found themselves engaged in a standoff after attempting to conduct a vehicle stop on a suspicious car near Paradise and Winnick. As the driver began driving recklessly, even resorting to driving on sidewalks at times, the situation escalated. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. The vehicle eventually came to a stop near Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, leading to the establishment of a barricade situation. Commuters should anticipate road closures from Flamingo and Koval, eastbound towards University Center Drive.
