Cary's magic is his ability to be a comedian. He doesn't take himself too seriously when he is on screen. He is elegant, but he wears it lightly. Cary's homosexuality has been rumored for a long time. Some people think that he had a romantic relationship with Randolph Scott. He lived with him on and off over a period of twelve years. He was married five times. This doesn't prove a thing, but it is a good context. Jennifer Grant, his only daughter, has denied these rumors over the years. Jennifer Grant was recently asked again about this because she is producing a television series about her father, Archie, on ITV, an English TV channel. She continues to insist that her father was not gay, but she adds that she will never be able to know the truth. If you spend a lot of time with your parents, you will see them differently than most people. Jennifer, aged 57, said: "I never noticed a single hint of it." "I would have noticed it, but not because I would care." She continued, "But I must speak the truth: Dad was charming and he had wonderful friendships, but it's not true that he flirted with men." "A friend sent me an image the other day showing Gregory Peck with my father, Mervyn and Mervyn. They're all good friends." But I never got the hint." Jennifer said, "Perhaps he was involved with a man earlier in his career." I will never know. But if he had, that's fantastic. "I hope he liked it." Jennifer wrote this in her memoir from 2011: "Can't fault men for wanting him and wouldn't even be surprised if Dad flirted with me back." The question is usually more about the asker. Dad enjoyed being called homosexual. He said that it made women want "to prove the assertion incorrect." [From People] Grant's biographers disagree on this issue, but I think the rumors are probably true. It's also my opinion that we shouldn't make any definitive statements about the sexuality a person, who is either a) dead or b) would not have been able come out before retirement. Cary, for example, could have lost his career if he had been open about being gay or bisexual. Coming out is also a deeply individual thing. People should do it the way they feel comfortable, even if that means not coming out at all. The person should have the right to decide when and how they come out. Cary was a notoriously private person who grew up at a different time. He may have kept his queerness to himself after he retired, believing that it was no one else's concern. Cary, or any other celebrity of that era, would never have admitted to being gay without saying so himself. We can only speculate. It would be like taking away something from him, his right to come out the way he wants. He didn't get that in his lifetime.
