The Last Edmonton Coal Mine | EXPLORE YEG

Hey Everyone and Welcome to the Alberta Adventurer Family Channel; where we adventure, explore and live life on our Homestead. Today come along with us as we travel to Whitemud Creek Mining Co. in Edmonton Alberta and give you a short History lesson on Mining in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

In 1840 the Hudson's Bay Company started mining Coal usually with 1-2 people digging into the banks of the North Saskatchewan River where coal seams were visible due to erosion. Regular mining operations began shortly after in 1880. At one point Edmonton had over 160 mines covering 3260 Acres and producing 15 million tones of coal.

On February 13, 1947 Leduc No. 1 mage a huge discovery and struck oil. This provided the geological key to Alberta's Future and Economy. Homes switched to gas, streetcars to electricity and railways to diesel. Edmonton grew around the mine and forced closure in 1970, making Whitemud Creek "The Last Edmonton Coal Mine."
