Why The Media Covered Up A Union Massacre

Author and documentary filmmaker Greg Mitchell joins the program to discuss his film "Memorial Day Massacre". During Memorial Day in 1937, a gathering took place at Sam's Place, a former tavern and dance hall located at 113th Street and Green Bay Avenue, which served as the headquarters of the SWOC (Steel Workers Organizing Committee). The event brought together unionists, their families, and sympathizers. The gathering included an outdoor picnic lunch, speakers, songs, and drew a crowd estimated to be between 1,500 to 2,500 people, including picketers, their families, supporters of the strike, and curious onlookers. The assembled crowd planned to march towards the Republic Steel mill to engage in picketing, but their path was obstructed by a line of approximately 300 Chicago policemen. Despite this barrier, the leading protestors asserted their right to proceed. It was during this confrontation that the police opened fire on the crowd (though the exact details are disputed due to a lack of citation). As chaos ensued, the police shot and killed ten individuals, four of whom died that day, while six others succumbed to their injuries later. Additionally, nine people sustained permanent disabilities, and another 28 suffered serious head injuries from being struck with police clubs. Dorothy Day, who was present at the scene, recounted the events, stating that on Memorial Day, May 30, 1937, the police fired upon a parade of striking steel workers and their families at the entrance of the Republic Steel Company in South Chicago. The gunfire resulted in fifty people being shot, ten of whom later lost their lives, and approximately one hundred others being beaten with clubs.
