Why your boat needs bottom paint! My experience

Before moving to Key Largo I knew my boat was going to be sitting in a wet slip (in the water) and I dreaded the idea of getting my boat bottom painted. I thought I could get away with taking it out once a week to clean it, but I was wrong!

Not only is taking the boat out of the water once a week a lot of work, but it was also a futile effort. Growth on the bottom started to get worse and worse and after only 20 days It basically needed to be sanded already the growth got that bad.

So from my experience, this is why your boat needs bottom paint. Also known as, antifouling paint. Not having bottom paint will cause a nightmare of algae and barnacle growth that once started, can't be stopped. In the beginning of the video you'll see what it looks like after only 20 days without bottom paint.

I always asked myself, why do I need bottom paint? Well now I know! Learn from my experience and don't risk your boat sitting in the water for more than 2-3 days at a time. The only good thing I got from having my boat in the water for so long was it created a very visible waterline so when I brought my boat to Boat Depot of Key Largo they new exactly where to sand and apply the bottom paint.

I was a little worried having bottom paint on my boat would make it look a little more ugly, but I was wrong! It didn't take away from the sexiness of the boat at all! In fact, I think it looks even better with bottom paint. I have a black hard bottom paint. Unlike some of the softer blue bottom paint you sometimes see it will not smear off on contact. Instead, it chips off.
