Bride Price & Dowry in Joshua 15

In Joshua 15 Othniel gave Caleb the city of Kiriath-Sefer in exchange for his daughter, Achsah. This is called a bride price. Then Caleb gave Achsah a plot of land in the Negev and this would become part of Othniel's holdings when they married. This is called a dowry. If Othniel ever divorced Achsah, he would lose both the bride price and the dowry. It wasn't just buying and selling women. It was a system that tied families together and protected women from abuse.
