Jump the Starlink Train | Space Weather News 05.30.2019
This episode of Space Weather News sponsored in part by 3ric Johanson: http://instagram.com/scubist
This week, I have gotten multiple requests to talk about the Starlink train, the first 60 satellites in the new Space X venture to bring fast, global internet to the masses. This new constellation will have many challenges to face in the future. Some of you may remember the video called the "Phone Sat Paradigm" I did 4 years ago on this very architecture (you can watch it here: https://vimeo.com/120310640 ). The video is still relevant today and it illustrates just how little we understand about these types of constellations and their susceptibility to space weather. Only time will tell how Starlink will perform. Especially as the Sun wakes up in the coming months, things promise to get interesting and I am thrilled you are here with me watching this new era unfold. Break out the popcorn. It ought to be a good show!
As for the Sun, this week we are seeing old regions 2740 and 2741 returning to STEREO's view and they are still firing solar storms. This means they could still be storm producers as they rotate back into Earth view near the end of the week. We also have a small pocket of fast solar wind that is causing minor disturbances, but mainly limited to Earth's night side and to high latitudes. On top of that we also have a new region from cycle 25 that appeared momentarily on the Sun's face, but has since receded (I highlighted its appearance in this video.). This is evidence of more stirrings from the new solar cycle!
