For those of us living in reality, it’s no surprise that racism affects what are houses are appraised for. Jude Bernard has experienced this before, so when his appraised for less than his neighbors’ homes despite having more features, he decided to de-Blackify it and get another appraisal. In the 18 months difference in time, his home appraised for $500,000 more after removing his Blackness from the premises. That’s an 11% increase. On his page, plenty of people are arguing that this is just because of the time difference. Now, this is coming from people who find every possible explanation for why something isn’t racist, whereas those of us comfortable with reality can easily figure out what’s going on here. But, if you needed the extra proof, let’s take another example.

In 2021, Tenisha Tate Austin and Paul Austin had their home appraised after pouring $400,000 into fixing up the house. They knew something was wrong when that only netted them a $100,000 increase in the appraisal. So they did the same thing, erasing their presence and having a YT stand-in welcome the appraiser in their place. Voila. Their home was suddenly $500,000 more valuable. In the years since, they’ve sued and the DOJ has even gotten involved.

So, if you’re planning on selling your home, or if you’re going to get it appraised, you’ll get a higher appraisal if you erase yourself first. Doesn’t that just make you proud to be an American? #YouHateToSeeIt
