Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos spent $42 million on a project to construct a 500-foot-tall mechanical clock designed to last 10,000 years inside a mountain in western Texas.

The clock, conceived by Danny Hillis, is intended to encourage humanity to take a longer-term view of its future. There is no scheduled completion date, but the clock will be open to the public once finished.
