"Ibad" Means an Initiate Who Initiates

Salaam 'Alaykum:

The Qur'an uses the word "ibad" (or abd) to indicate one who initiates the protocols of Guidance given to us by Allah. In other words, we are consciously choosing to become Allah's Initiates. Allah has no need for slaves, and servants are part time workers. We submit ourselves to the Huda (Guidance) within Allah's Book and do so on a full-time basis as initiates.
