Sinus Headache : Causes & Treatment
Sinus headaches are a type of headache that is caused by inflammation and pressure in the sinuses. The sinuses are small, air-filled cavities in the bones of the face and skull. They are lined with a thin membrane that produces mucus. When the sinuses become inflamed, the mucus can't drain properly, which causes pressure and pain.
There are two main causes of sinus headaches:
* **Sinus infection:** A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is caused by a bacteria, virus, or fungus. It can be caused by a cold or the flu, or it can occur on its own.
* **Allergies:** Allergies can also cause sinus headaches. When you have allergies, your body releases histamines, which can cause inflammation in the sinuses.
Other possible causes of sinus headaches include:
* **Structural problems:** If you have a deviated septum or nasal polyps, these can block the sinuses and cause inflammation.
* **Nasal congestion:** This can be caused by a cold, the flu, allergies, or other factors.
* **Air travel:** The change in air pressure during air travel can sometimes trigger a sinus headache.
The symptoms of a sinus headache can vary, but they typically include:
* **Pain and pressure in the face and forehead:** The pain is often worse around the eyes, nose, and cheeks.
* **Stuffy nose:** This can make it difficult to breathe through your nose.
* **Runny nose:** This is usually clear or slightly yellow mucus.
* **Fever:** A fever is not always present, but it can be a sign of a sinus infection.
* **Cough:** A cough can be a symptom of a sinus infection or allergies.
* **Sneezing:** Sneezing is also a symptom of allergies.
The treatment for a sinus headache depends on the cause. If the headache is caused by a sinus infection, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics. If the headache is caused by allergies, your doctor may prescribe antihistamines or decongestants.
There are also some home remedies that can help relieve the symptoms of a sinus headache, such as:
* **Over-the-counter pain relievers:** These can help relieve the pain and pressure.
* **Steam inhalation:** This can help loosen mucus and relieve congestion.
* **Saline nasal rinse:** This can help flush out mucus and bacteria from the sinuses.
* **Rest:** Getting plenty of rest can help your body heal and relieve the symptoms of a sinus headache.
If you have a sinus headache that is severe or does not go away after a few days, you should see a doctor.
