How to Make Grain Spawn For Growing Mushrooms

This video is about how to make grain spawn jars for growing mushrooms. Grain spawn is any cereal grain that has been inoculated with mycelium. Mycelium acts as the root system for a mushroom and consists of a fine network of filaments. The purpose of grain spawn is to allow the mycelium to multiply in a controlled environment. When the grain spawn has fully colonized the jar the grain kernels can be broken up and can be added to a bulk substrate. The mycelium will then colonize the bulk substrate and form fruiting bodies which are the mushrooms.

Making grain spawn jars is an easy and simple way to get into growing mushrooms and determine if it is something you would be interested in. Sterilization is essential because mold spores or bacteria will compete for the nutrients in the grain and can outgrow the mushroom mycelium. The cotton ball on the jar lid allows for some gas exchange while preventing contaminants from getting in the jar. The grain spawn should be white and fluffy. If it is another color this could indicate that it has been contaminated with other fungus spores or bacteria.
