Elizabeth Holmes' prison term shortening

Today, I want to talk to you about some breaking news that just came out: Elizabeth Holmes' prison term was just shortened by 2 years.

If you don't know who Elizabeth Holmes is, she is the former Theranos CEO who was convicted of fraud for lying about her company's blood-testing technology. She was sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison, but according to updated Bureau of Prisons records, her release date has been changed to December 12, 2032¹. That means she will serve about 9 years and 7 months instead of 11 years.

The reason for the change is not clear, but it could be due to good conduct, completion of programs, or time credits earned by Holmes while in prison¹. Holmes reported to a minimum-security, federal women's prison camp in Bryan, Texas, on May 30⁵. She had been out on bail since she was indicted on fraud charges in 2018. During that time, she had two children with her partner, Billy Evans⁴.

Holmes is not the only one who got a shorter sentence. Her co-conspirator, Sunny Balwani, also saw two years shaved off of his 13-year sentence. His projected date of release is now April 1, 2034². Balwani was convicted in a separate trial for his role in Theranos. He and Holmes were ordered to pay $452 million in restitution to the victims of the fraud, including investors like Rupert Murdoch, Walgreens, and Safeway³.

Holmes has appealed her conviction, and the proceedings for that process have been under way while she serves her sentence². She also tried to delay the start of her prison sentence by citing her two young children as a reason⁴, but the court rejected her request.
