Unveiling the Truth: Why The Government Sought To Punish Whistleblower Reality Winner

Author Kerry Howley joins the program to discuss her book "Bottoms Up and the Devil Laughs". Kerry tells us why she focused the book on the case of Reality Winner. Winner is a former intelligence specialist and a whistleblower who gained attention in 2017 for leaking classified documents to the media. Winner was working for a government contractor, Pluribus International Corporation, when she leaked a top-secret report from the National Security Agency (NSA) to news outlet The Intercept. The leaked document revealed information about Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
The report provided details about Russian hacking attempts on U.S. voting systems and raised concerns about the integrity of the election process. The leak generated significant media coverage and added to the ongoing discussions surrounding Russian involvement in American politics.
Shortly after The Intercept published the document, Reality Winner was arrested by the FBI and charged with violating the Espionage Act, a law enacted to protect national security. In June 2018, she pleaded guilty to leaking the classified information and was subsequently sentenced to more than five years in federal prison.
The case drew attention to issues such as government transparency, whistleblowing, and the protection of classified information. Supporters of Winner argue that she acted in the public interest by revealing information about election security, while critics contend that she endangered national security by leaking classified documents. The case continues to spark debates regarding the balance between protecting sensitive information and the public's right to know.
