The 5 C’s of Survival as listed by the US Military consists of:
1) Cutting Tool (knife, axe, saw, etc)
2) Cordage (paracord, bank line, climbing rope, etc.)
3) Container (water bottle, cook pot, pack, etc.)
4) Combustion (lighter, farro rod, flint and steel, etc.)
5) Cover (shelter, tent, tarp, poncho, etc.)

These items are difficult to reproduce in a remote wilderness setting, are easily carried, and are the most valuable for sustaining life. Having these 5 pieces of kit can help ensure that you will have food, fire, water and shelter.
