Mauricio Pochettino is unveiled as the new Chelsea head coach in a press conference.

Mauricio said he is “proud” to become the new head coach of Chelsea and is confident he can revive the London club’s fortunes to get them challenging for the English Premier League title again.

The Argentine was hired in May on a two-year contract to replace interim coach Frank Lampard, Chelsea’s fourth manager of a turbulent season where they finished twelfth in the English Premier League.

It is Pochettino’s first coaching role since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in July last year, after winning the French league, cup and Super Cup and marks his return to the Premier League, where he had an impressive 5 1/2-year spell with Tottenham Hotspur that included a run to the 2019 Champions League final.

He is the permanent successor to Graham Potter, who replaced the Champions League-winning Thomas Tuchel last September but was fired in March after nearly seven months in charge. Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard had led the team on an interim basis since then but the the “Blues” finished in the bottom half for the first time since the 1995-96 season, earning just 44 points, their lowest during the Premier League era.

That was despite Chelsea spending around 630 million USD over the last two transfer windows as the club’s new American ownership — led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital — made a whirlwind start to their reign.

Despite signing forwards Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson for a reportedly combined fee of 87 million pounds (110.4 million USD), Chelsea have had a clear-out in the off-season transfer window in order to balance their books.

Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mateo Kovacic, Kai Havertz, Edouard Mendy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and captain Cesar Azpilicueta have all departed with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Romelu Lukaku and Hakim Ziyech expected to join them.
