You Gotta Catch Them All! Custom 3D Printed Pokemon Lightbox Design!
I have loved getting involved in 3D printing, and adding 2 Bambu Labs Printers, a P1P and a P1S, to my print farm has really opened up some options. One thing I have wanted to create for some time is a more accurate logo lightbox design to go with my other lights. Well, for starters I think I have something that people will want to catch. A new Custom 3D Printed Pokemon Lightbox.
The Pokemon logo is iconic, and while I could have put it on one of my more traditional lightbox faces I wanted to do something more unique and special. I wanted to make the logo a lightbox. Now, I've seen others do this, and I just didn't like what they did. Not that they were bad, I just thought they looked flat. I wanted something with some depth to it. So I dove into Tinkercad and got to work.
I knew I wanted the logo to come through the face to give it some depth, but that also meant I needed some sort of backer to act not only to diffuse the light but also to keep the letters together. I used a tool to convert a PNG of the Logo into an SVG file, which is what Tinkercad recognizes. From here I had to duplicate, manipulate, extrapolate, trim, cut, and otherwise shape the logo to get what I thought would work.
Once I exported the working file out of Tinkercad I dropped the file into Bambu Studio, the slicing software which will allow me to configure it for use on my P1P or P1S printers. I got to work "painting" the different parts of the lightbox, which basically tells the printer when to change colors and what colors to change to. Both of my printers feature one of Bambu Labs' AMS or Automatic Material System. This system communicates with the printhead to ensure smooth feeding and automatic filament change at mid-print. With the setups I have each of my printers can use up to 4 colors and change them automatically.
Looking at my first prototype, which I printed at 50% size, there are a few areas I still need to address, but this is getting really close. Make sure to check out my 3D printer accessory store if you're looking to snag something like this, or other 3D printed items, for your game room, man cave, or office.
