Random Gameplay 46: Chip's Challenge (PC/Steam Version)
I know there's going to be a bunch of people who's jaw will drop just seeing me play this, lol! This is one of those sorts of games that has a very strong and dedicated community. In fact you HAVE to be dedicated to beat all the levels of this game because they get ridiculously difficult and patience testing. (Yes, I beat all 149 levels, including the notorious Block Buster) In this video I'll give tips on how best to advance. I also tried to keep the game looking like it's most classic form via 4:3 aspect ratio and leaving black all around it. Unfortunately due to Youtube misdetecting my 4:3 ratio video as 16:9 and me no longer being able to use formatting tags because they discontinued it June 2016 for no good reason like they do every other good feature on the site, I couldn't fix it and I had to remake it in "HD". By "HD" though I mean "upscaled and lost clarity" because that's what upscaling does and why I avoid doing it as I play games in SD. :P But it's the best I can do to keep it in it's most original look.
Little history:
It was originally released on the Atari Lynx in 1989 and ended up getting ported over to other platforms, most notably the PC in Microsoft's "Best Of Entertainment Pack" and 4th "Entertainment Pack" where it had the most popularity. Chuck Summerville (the creator of the game) had a sequel ready to go, but due to some poor knowledge of the video game industry from the christian company that bought the rights to the game, they wanted to sell it for too much. So it ended up stuck in a finished state but impossible to release for years due to a legal hades of sorts.
Many years passed... So many years that the Windows port could no longer be ran on newer OSes due to compatibility poo. But he did make a spiritual successor known as "Chuck's Challenge" on PC/Steam for people to enjoy and upload their own created levels to (I actually made a few too). But people often had to resort to Tile World (an open source CC engine) to play it in a recreated state. But Chuck didn't give up. He tried negotiating with the company again later and they had a much more reasonable offer, which he accepted, putting the game back in it's rightful hands. This allowed him to release CC1 and CC2 on Steam at once for the world to enjoy in a modern age. During the time of release, he put all 3 "challenge" games in a $5 bundle along with level editors for peeps to make and upload their own creations for others to play. (Which is a pretty amazing idea because I'm sure any dedicated player would get their own ideas for puzzles. Heck, I even used to make my own levels on graph paper as a kid, lol!)
... Which I actually got. Yes, they were the only 3 games I caved and got download-only on Steam because I loved the first so much (Edit: The first game shown here is now free on Steam!) that I've wanted to play the sequel for ages + getting Chuck's Challenge was a bonus on top of that. Plus I wanted to support him in some way for his efforts in getting CC2 out. Since I played CC1 back when I was like... 5 or so, I literally had to wait 21 years to play the sequel. So can you blame me for caving for once and getting 2 new epic puzzle/action games and 1 I played before but can play on a modern PC for a mere $5? lol! This game even has fixed levels as the port to the PC didn't exactly go super well and some elements were broke. So I got to play old levels in their proper forms like "Nightmare", which is nice! But they also have little retro throwbacks in that when you get achievements, windows pop up notifying you of them (not like a usual steam notification) that you gotta click "OK" to in reference to how the game would give you messages on the PC before. Clever!
.... Still' wish Steam would give developers more of a cut though, especially now that they're so established. Greedy Gabe must be swimming in money.
