The Devastating Consequences of Evil Alliances | 2 Chronicles 19-23
In 2 Chronicles 19, King Jehoshaphat of Judah returns from battle to find Jehu the seer waiting for him. Jehu rebukes Jehoshaphat for allying himself with Ahab, the wicked king of Israel, and participating in idol worship. However, Jehoshaphat is commended for his earlier reforms and is instructed to continue administering justice in the land, appointing judges and reminding them of their duties to serve impartially and fear God.
Chapter 20 unfolds as Judah faces a grave threat from a vast coalition of neighboring nations. Jehoshaphat, in response, proclaims a fast and leads the people in prayer, seeking God's help. Micaiah, a prophet, delivers a message assuring them that the battle belongs to the Lord. Encouraged by this, Jehoshaphat orders the people to sing praises to God, and as they do, the enemy forces turn on each other, leading to their defeat. The people of Judah return with great joy, and Jehoshaphat institutes further reforms, eliminating idol worship from the land.
Jehoram, the son of Jehoshaphat, becomes king of Judah in Chapter 21. Unfortunately, he forsakes the ways of his father and follows the wicked practices of Israel's kings. God sends a letter through the prophet Elijah, denouncing Jehoram's wickedness and pronouncing judgment upon him. As a consequence, Jehoram faces constant turmoil, including a rebellion from Edom and the loss of his sons and wealth due to divine intervention. His reign is marked by suffering and ends with a painful illness.
Ahaziah, Jehoram's son, ascends to the throne of Judah in Chapter 22. He follows in the footsteps of his father and continues to embrace the wicked ways of the house of Ahab, seeking counsel from his relatives who have been advising the Israelite kings. Ahaziah's reign is cut short when he joins forces with Joram, the king of Israel, and suffers defeat at the hands of Jehu, who has been anointed as king over Israel by divine command. Ahaziah's death fulfills the prophecies against the house of Ahab.
Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, seizes the opportunity to seize power after her son's death in Chapter 23. She massacres the royal offspring to secure her position, but Joash, Ahaziah's infant son, is secretly rescued by Jehoiada the priest and his wife. For six years, Athaliah reigns unopposed, but in the seventh year, Jehoiada gathers the priests and Levites, revealing Joash as the rightful king. The people rally behind Joash, and Athaliah is captured and executed.
