Yehuda Nevo's survey of popular and official rock inscriptions pinpoints the emergence of Islam. He classifies them chronologically and conceptually so that a clear picture emerges of how Islam was began under caliphate direction and patronage, built upon earlier sects. The evolution of religious terminology is laid bare. His findings are an indispensable contribution to the debate of how and when Islam began.
