Why "God" is so often represented by "Divine Fire"

In so many ancient writings, God (or the power of God) is represented by Fire, and that by God's grace, our impurities can be burned away. It is wise then to be mindful of our body of consciousness in relationship to this 'divine fire', and seek to become more pure in relationship to it.
