▶ If at First You Don't Succeed - Joseph Matthäus Aigner was a fairly well-known portrait painter in 19th-century Austria who, apparently, was quite an unhappy fellow: he several times attempted su*cide. His first attempt was at the young age of 18 when he tried to hang himself but was interrupted by the mysterious appearance of a Capuchin monk. At age 22 he again tried to h*ng himself but was again saved from the act by the very same monk. Eight years later, his death was ordained by others who sentenced him to the gallows for his political activities. Once again, his life was saved by the intervention of the same monk. At age 68, Aigner finally succeeded in su*cide, a pistol doing the trick. His funeral ceremony was conducted by the same Capuchin monk, a man whose name Aigner never even knew. ▶ They Lived as Brothers... - In 1975, while riding a moped in Bermuda, a man named Erskine Ebbin was accidentally struck and k*lled by a taxi. One year later, his brother Neville was k*lled in the exact same way. In fact, he was riding the same moped. And to stretch the odds even further, he was struck by the very same taxi driven by the same driver -- and even carrying the very same passenger. ▶ The Best Worst Aim - Henry Ziegland thought he had dodged fate. In 1883, he broke off a relationship with his girlfriend who, out of distress, committed su*cide. The girl's brother was so enraged that he hunted down Ziegland and sh*t him. The brother, believing he had k*lled Ziegland, then turned his g*n on himself and took his own l*fe. But Ziegland had not been k*lled. The bullet, in fact, had only grazed his face and then lodged in a tree. Ziegland surely thought himself a lucky man. Some years later, however, Ziegland decided to cut down the large tree, which still had the b*llet in it. The task seemed so formidable that he decided to blow it up with a few sticks of dynamite. ▶ A Raw Diet - Famed writer Edgar Allan Poe wrote 70 poems and 66 short stories during his 40 years on this planet but published only one full-length novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, written in 1838 in which a whaling ship sinks, one of the survivors is named Richard Parker and is eaten by the other survivors. 46 years after it was published, a yacht sank in real life and 3 of the 4 survivors also decided to eat the cabin boy named...
