The Leopard 2 is a German main battle tank built by the German company Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann, developed in the early 1970s and entered service in 1979, and replaces the previous Leopard as the main battle tank in the Bundeswehr.
Leopard 2 is the result of the cancellation of the MBT-70 project, in which Americans and Germans were involved, with the aim of creating a tank that could replace the American M-60 and the German Leopard-1, existing at the time in large quantity in Europe.
It is the answer to the appearance of the Russian T-64 and T-72 tanks, with 125mm cannons.
Its different versions have served in the armed forces of Germany and ten other European countries, as well as non-European countries.
The Leopard 2A4, is the most numerous of all tanks in the Leopard family. More than 3480 Leopard 2 have been manufactured.
