Why has Chinese deal activity in the US declined to its lowest level in 17 years?

Chinese deal activity in the US has fallen to its lowest level in almost two decades due to geopolitical tensions between the two countries. US merger and acquisition investment from China amounted to just $221 million so far this year, compared to $3.4 billion at the same point last year.

This decline in investment reflects the impact of increased regulatory intervention and the scrutiny of business relations between the US and China. Apart from the US, other countries that have also experienced a slump in Chinese investment include Germany, where Chinese deals totaled just $189 million so far this year, the lowest amount in over a decade. Additionally, the UK and Australia recorded $503 million and $228 million, respectively.

Chinese outbound M&A has shown signs of growth in other parts of the world, such as Peru, but the overall outbound investment is far lower than before the coronavirus pandemic when China's full-year outbound M&A peaked at $212 billion in 2016 and $54 billion in 2019.
