Do you really need a Faraday Cage ?.

Do you really need a Faraday cage to protect stuff from a EMP. Can you make your own protection at home without spending a lot of money ?. Would it be better to have everything in one cage, or would it be better to have everything protected without keeping everything in one place ?. It's pretty simple to protect items from a EMP.
