The National Citizens Inquiry testimony of business owner Angela Tabak.
Her heartbreaking story is about her 20 year-old son who had suffered a head injury at school when he was younger. It affected his mental capacity, but he was able to live on his own with a full-time job. After the pandemic started, he changed drastically. He took in everything from the media and the government. He was fearful and asked her to bring him meals or shop for him. She describes how he seeked help to start the shift from online classes to in person. He found a physicatrist and began feeling optimistic. He seemed excited until she got a call from her husband. He was gone.
Angela tells of how he left a suicide note and individual letters to his family. He also left an apology letter to the paramedics before he called 911 and took his life.
His death could have been avoided, but the quality of mental health care in Canada has declined. They favor online appointments and lengthy questionnaires now with no in-person visits. In Angela's sons case, the appointment was delayed because the psychiatrist didn't have his patient files available. This is absolutely unexceptable.
