Farm Chores are Harder Right Now

So far this year we’ve been blessed with pretty moderate spring and summer temperatures, but that’s all about to change. And we preview the next farm project, an A-frame chicken coop made from reclaimed materials!

When summer gets into full swing here in Kentucky we think one thing: humidity. So far this year we’ve been fortunate (although we could always use a little more rain) but it looks like a heat wave is on the horizon. Taking care of the animals requires a little more forethought this time as year as you try to accomplish a day’s worth of chores early in the morning so you can minimize the number of trips you make out into the sun in the middle of the day. Of course you have to make sure all the animals have everything they need as well, which is ample shade and plenty of clean water. It’s a lot of work, but really it’s not all that different than any other time of year – just a little hotter.

Our new bottle baby Nubian goat, Elsa, is doing great and has made friends with Ricky the Wonder Dwarf. The two of them do butt heads over a bottle, though! And aside from fighting a couple of broody hens over and over and over and over each day, all the critters are doing well. The only animals we’re really worried about in the heat are our broad-breasted turkeys, but we think we have a solution on how to handle that (more on that later).
