How Protestants undermined Copernicus. w/Sam Shamoun @shamounian

Repeat of my previous talk, with minor updates and commentary from Sam... Copernicus, Polish astronomer and mathematician, was best known for his heliocentric model of the universe, which placed the sun at the center and the planets orbiting around it. This model challenged the prevailing belief that the Earth was at the center of the universe. Copernicus' work laid the foundation for modern astronomy, his ideas had a profound impact on the scientific revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Protestant condemnation of Copernicus was swift. The Reformation condemned the work as delusional, if not outright heresy. Luther wrote “That fool would upset the whole art of astronomy.” John Calvin called him "insane".

A Lutheran pastor by name of Andreas Osiander oversaw the publication of the book. He wrote and inserted an anonymous preface stating that the hypotheses in the book were not intended to be taken as absolutely true, or even probable, but were merely put forth to facilitate calculation. This was false. Copernicus believed what he wrote. The foreword undermined Copernicus, despite Osiander agreeing that Copernicus was correct.

Why would he insert a false foreword, undermining the work?
