Look at you, late Roman. You degenerate, decadent fool. Lying on your couch, eating grapes all day long, while the Empire is overrun by barbarian hordes ! Going to the Colosseum or to the Circus Maximus, eating free bread, and watching games all day, while the cities in Gallia are being sacked, looted and burned to the ground by germanic invaders! Or, this is at least how many historians portrayed the late Romans well into the 20th century. But, I hope that I could show already in some videos, that this view is absolutely outdated. I have already analyzed in these two videos here, that the late Roman soldier was absolutely not inferior to the early roman legionary. And I hope that I could also show in this video here, that the late Romans had very good reasons for not being so super motivated any more, to fight for their empire. The debasement of the Roman currency played a really big role. But apart from all these reasons, there were many other systemic and societal reasons, for why the late Romans sometimes not only chose to not support their Empire any more, but why they sometimes even chose to actively fight it. They sometimes even joined the germanic invaders, or formed bands of marauding rebels. Why that is, why the late Romans had become so fed up with their Empire, and why many of them were probably cheering the dissolution of the Western Roman Empire, we shall explore in this video here!
