YT TEEN IN 1957. CHINESE OR SPANISH? OKAY. BLACK? THAT’S DIFFERENT

We’ve often talked about the proximity to YTness that certain “non-white” groups have. Oftentimes these other groups align with YT interests instead of against oppression, and as it turns out, that proximity is nothing new.

In this clip from 1957, you can see the difference in anti-Black racism compared to anti-Hispanic or anti-Asian racism. This 17-year-old YT girl explains that she thinks she could get along with Spanish or Chinese people just fine, but when it comes to Black people, that’s different.

To this day, we still experience these different tiers of power, privilege, and oppression. The system of YT domination positions YT people on top and Black people on the bottom, with everyone else somewhere in between. This is why people who should be natural allies against the power structure are not.

Instead of having long-lasting coalitions, other groups get what they can from us and what they can from their proximity to YTness, prioritizing and defending the latter.
