Have you heard of the Love Canal?

After contaminating the canal with over 21,000 tons of chemical waste, the Hooker Chemical company sold it to the Niagara Falls Board of Education who decided to put a simple cover on it and move on.

Guess nobody cared about the children attending schools surrounded by poison. This would lead to the creation of the Superfunds Act which gave the government unprecedented power to come in and clean things up.

They didn’t have any ulterior motives… right?
