Did Nefarious Groups Seize the Reigns of the Media?

Here is some evidence that suggests to me that the media has not only been manipulated throughout history, but that it's very likely happening today. If you look at things from the perspective of the politicians and the 1%, it seems like a really smart idea. They get to write reality in real-time in every news publication and on any channel they control, which as we know, is about 6 major corporations at this point.

It's not that we shouldn't trust FOX, or MSNBC, or CNN. It's that we should be very careful about consuming news. Is there an agenda at play? Is there more or even less to a story? Why do certain stories dominate the news (MH17, ebola, ISIS, Khorasan, etc) and then just disappear?

It's a lot of distraction, fear-porn, and propaganda.
