Robert Gault, a native of Crawfordville, Ark., grew up in Chicago. After graduating from the University of Illinois, he joined the Marine Corps, where he became head coach of both the Marine Corps and the Air Force boxing teams. He was selected to coach the U.S. boxing team, the first black to coach the U.S. boxing team in any Olympics.
