By now we have discussed in many videos in hopefully good detail, how Rome transformed from the most magnificent city of antiquity, to the field of ruins that was found at the end of the middle ages, and the beginning of the Renaissance period. We analyzed how much damage was inflicted by the repeated sacks of the city in the fifth and sixth century AD, we also looked at how much damage the practice of Spolia did to the city, where old buildings were looted in order to build new ones, and we also looked at natural events such as the repeated floodings of the Tiber river, which kept raising the ground level, burying old structures beneath thick layers of mud which then over centuries turned into soil. But there was one source of damage, that above all, damaged the ancient city structure of Rome much more than all other events combined. One source of damage that in reality would be the real destroyer of ancient Rome, paling all barbarian sacks, all wars, all deliberate damage to the ancient monuments, even making the tiber floods seem like childs play.
