SDO's Ultra-high Definition View of 2012 Venus Transit | NASA CREATIONS

The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), launched on Feb. 11, 2010, is a cutting-edge spacecraft dedicated to studying the sun. Over a span of five years, its mission involves analyzing the sun's atmosphere, magnetic field, and its impact on Earth's climate and atmospheric chemistry. SDO captures images with 8 times the resolution of HD TV, producing over a terabyte of daily data. An exceptional event documented by SDO occurred on June 5, 2012: the transit of Venus passing in front of the sun, a rare event that occurs in pairs every eight years with long separations of 105 or 121 years. The spacecraft's imagery, taken in various wavelengths including extreme ultraviolet light and a part of the visible spectrum, showcases the sun's different layers. The red, golden, magenta, and orange colors represent different wavelengths, with 304 and 171 angstrom wavelengths revealing the sun's atmospheric features beyond what is visible to the naked eye.
