Medical watchdog opposes conversion therapy yet can’t even say how many complaints its had

The General Medical Council – the watchdog for doctors and psychiatrists – can not say how many complaints it has received about conversion therapy, nor how many of those led to an investigation, nor if any of those led to a professional conduct hearing, i can reveal. In response to a Freedom of Information request from i, the GMC said it “cannot provide the information” as it would take too long and cost too much money. The regulatory body, which is responsible for all complaints against doctors and psychiatrists, said that its database only goes back to 2006, but it would only be able to search electronically for a complaint that did not lead to an investigation since 2018. In any case, the GMC added, “there is no specific allegation which covers conversion therapy”.
