Arcade Games From the 1980s I Like vs Don't Like
During the 1980s, the arcades were amazing. The sights, the sounds, the overall experience was so much fun. I spent so much money playing games at Butler Skateland and Sammy's Burger Place in the '80s, I definitely had my favorite games. Let's take a look at some of the 1980s arcade games that I like versus don't like.
Afterburner:
Afterburner was an amazing arcade title, with amazing sound, tight controls, and voice sound effects, this was such an amazing game to play. This is one I played on the regular at Sammy's Burger place in my hometown of Menomonee falls, Wisconsin. I loved slamming the stick from the top left to the bottom right to do barrel rolls. Easily one of my favorites.
Joust
Even on the Atari 2600, I was never a big fan of Joust. The controls were always very floaty, I didn't care for the gameplay style, and overall this was a game that I just did not enjoy. I know others did, it was just never my taste.
Pole Position
Oh yeah, my love for racing games started early on and Pole Position was one of the first games I fell in love with. I loved the high and low-speed gear shift, the gas pedal and steering wheel, and just the overall sense of speed. A 6-year-old me could often be found playing this.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
So unlike some of the other games on here, I don't dislike Indy because it's a bad game. It's a difficult game. It was also a game that always had tremendously long lines at Sammy's Burger Place. I rarely if ever got to play this, and when I did I typically died very quickly.
Dragon's Lair
This is another one that I did not like more so due to the difficulty level versus anything else. I love Don Bluth's animation, and being able to play a cartoon in the arcade was phenomenal. This was something that I could not figure out the patterns at a young age and always felt like I was spending a lot of money and not getting very far.
Donkey Kong
I'm no Steve Weibe but I can't help but play Donkey Kong almost any time that I see it in the arcade. This is one of the first arcade experiences I ever had and it still holds up. It's challenging, it's fun, and who doesn't love the intro music to this game? It's a classic!
Centipede
I don't know if playing it on the Atari 2600 first is what tainted my view of this game but I've just never been a fan of any version of Centipede. The trackball is neat, but the game overall just never seemed fun to me. I think this is another one of them where I just died way too easily when I was a kid therefore it was something I could never get into.
PlayChoice 10
I am totally cheating here because the PlayChoice10 could have up to 10 games in it, but I loved the overall idea and philosophy behind this. These are just NES games, make no mistake, but they were some of the best games out there. I loved playing this at Trackside Hobbies while I was waiting for batteries to charge when I was RC racing as a teenager, and I still absolutely love this cabinet now. Next to the Star Wars arcade cabinet, the PlayChoice 10 is the arcade cabinet I most want in my collection.
