Why did God abandon his temple?

Naturally, God viewed his Temple as the holiest thing on Earth, because it was the one building on the planet that represented his presence among his children.

However, on two separate occasions, God would allow pagans to destroy it, and for almost two thousand years, no Jewish temple has stood on the Temple Mount. Why would God allow people do this to his sanctuary? Why didn't He protect his house?
