How much less Fire Apparatus would cost the taxpayers if the truck manufacturer was allowed to pick the best products based on price versus the end user picking every single attribute possible. Products combined with engineering effort per truck drives the cost up, and up and up. For manufacturers this is highly inefficient especially when fire apparatus runs calls mainly for medical or accidents. The OEM passes all the cost for highly specified fire rig right on to the taxpayers, pumpers which cost less than $300k just a few years ago are now $800k.. MUCH of that resulting from the OEMs inability to use economy of pricing for products and materials.
