Before we get started with today’s topic, just a couple of housekeeping issues. In case you are wondering what makes me qualified to talk about today’s topic, which is, “Is a tracheostomy going to work?” It’s a question we get quite frequently from our readers and clients.

Before I go into today’s topic and break it down, what makes me qualified to talk about today’s topic? I’m a critical care registered nurse and I have been working in critical care intensive care for over 20 years in three different countries. I have been working as a nurse unit manager for over five years in intensive care. I’m the founder and managing director of Intensive Care at Home. With Intensive Care at Home, we provide a genuine alternative to a long-term stay in intensive care for predominantly long-term ventilated adults and children with tracheostomies. We also provided a genuine alternative to a long-term stay in intensive care for adults and children on BIPAP (bilevel positive airway pressure), CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), or non-invasive ventilation. We also provide Home TPN (total parenteral nutrition), home IV infusions including electrolyte management such as potassium infusions at home, also IV antibiotics at home.
