CIA Officer Frank Snepp Faked The News About Vietnam

In 1969 Frank Snepp arrived in Vietnam and he stayed there until he was evacuated as Saigon fell in 1975.

While there, he spent a good deal of time working with the press and he developed the ability to plant fake news stories in major media outlets like The New York Times, The New Yorker, the LA Times, Chicago Daily News and other outlets that supported the CIA Agency’s goals.

Younger reporters, like Associated Press’s Peter Arnett, refused to create fake news stories.

After Frank left the CIA he wrote a book, Decent Interval, that talked about his time in Vietnam. The CIA took a case to the Supreme Court winning a verdict that required Snepp to turn over all monies made for his book, about $300,000.

To Snepp, the Supreme courts decision on his case and on the Pentagon Papers case, were the government could impose prior restraint on the media, meant the only victory the U.S. could show for its war in Vietnam was undoing the First Amendment.

Frank Snepp went on to be a journalist working for some of the same outlets he’d once duped into printing fake news. But as a reformed spy he earned a Peabody award and an Emmy for his investigative reports.
