Roger B. Taney - Fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who delivered the majority opinion in Dred Scott v. Sandford, ruling that African-Americans could not be considered citizens and that Congress could not prohibit slavery in the territories of the United States.
Nathan Bedford Forrest - Confederate Army general during the American Civil War.

Abraham Lincoln - 16th president of the United States who abolished slavery.
William H. Seward - Secretary of State and Governor and opponent of the spread of slavery in the years leading up to the American Civil War.
Thaddeus Stevens - Member of House of Representatives and a fierce opponent of slavery and discrimination against African-Americans.
Charles Sumner - Senator and leader of the anti-slavery forces in Massachusetts.
Frederick Douglass - After escaping slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement.
