Patterns of Purpose and Meaning in Highly Active Seniors

The primary purpose of this research project is to explore the relationship of personal meaning and life satisfaction in a unique group of seniors. The participants of this survey are past participants of a continuing education program aimed at retired and/or elderly individuals. Through continued educational, physical, recreational, and social activities; these individuals strive to maintain meaning and purpose by maximizing opportunities for optimal growth and development.

Ninety participants completed a demographic form, the Life Satisfaction Index-revised and the Sources of Meaning Profile. Theory based on Individual Psychology principles guided this research and contributed to predictions that there should be a relationship between the degree to which one has purpose or meaning in life and measures of well-being.

Results are discussed in terms of counselor education and practice and how a developmental perspective on meaning and purpose can provide counselors with a practical inroad to the area of spirituality and counseling with their clients.

Educational Objectives: 1) The concept of "meaning complexity" in elderly populations will be defined and discussed. 2) Two different elderly populations were compared on Sources of Meaning and meaning complexity. Results are discussed.
