It’s Friday, friends, and on Something’s Happening Here that often means it’s time for an A.I. Update! I recently saw the movie Oppenheimer, in which one of the themes is the running fear that an atomic explosion would detonate the atmosphere and destroy all life on earth; and the fulfilment in that although the atmosphere did not ignite, life as they knew it on earth ended nonetheless. The advent of A.I. feels similar to me, and I’ve used The Manhattan Project as a parallel to it in the past. What do we do in a world where mindless computers can imitate and replicate anything from scratch? And how does that tie-in to our discussion about names?
