Ultima VII: The Black Gate — Doctor… Who? | DOS [#07]

In their last adventure the Avatar and his Companions sought out knowledge from a race of mysterious beings of light known as the "Wisps" …but to receive a favor you must first offer a favor, and in return they sought the wisdom of a sage — Alagnar of New Magincia, collected into his most treasured notebook. However he, wasn't about to give up his life's work so easily, for the answers to one question in particular was set heavily upon his mind — the true nature of Life and Death.

Such an answer could be found only within the haunted ruins of Skara Brae, once the island home of Shamino, now burned to ash by a tragic accident; the inhabitants had sought to rid themselves of a powerful liche… and in their haste had only doomed themselves to his eternal service. With the Avatar's aid the lost souls of Skara Brae could come together to free themselves from their living death, giving our hero some understanding to the question that had been asked… but into the answers themselves.

Along the way the Avatar delved deep into the eastern portion of the Deep Forest, home not only to the legendary Silverleaf trees… but to the forest spirits that call it their home — the Emps. Seeking to live as one with their surroundings, they had found their home was beaten cut away by a logger hired to satisfy the world's greed for the Silverleaf harvests. Fortunately, however, he was most agreeable in the Emps' desire for their homes to be maintained.

While there, the Avatar learned from them the fate of Julius, father of Nastassia — caretaker to the Shrine of Compassion — who had sacrificed his life years earlier when he saved the Emps during a fire that had previously threatened their homes and their lives. Learning of this Nastassia implored upon the spirit of her mother to forgive her father so that she, in turn, may forgive her for leaving the world all too soon…

Now — _after taking time off for training and spellcraft_ — it's time to return to Alagner with the answers he sought; but procuring his notebook from his vault won't be that simple…
