Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes is a horror novel that takes place in a science fiction setting. This novel reminded heavily of the science fiction film starring Lawerence Fishburn and Sam Neil called Event Horizon. Both stories have space ghost, a character just wanting to see a loved one who was separated, and eye gouging. This novel had all that I could want, but it took me a really long time to connect with these characters. I started really enjoying myself 50% in. The pace drastically picks up and the novel gets good. There’s a couple of good twists that I did not see coming. The ending is full of action and some clever twists. The beginning really made me work it, I don’t think it was ever in the do not finish category, but it was so hard to connect to any of the side characters, and Claire the main character took a while to connect as well. Long on my to-read list after the author's 1974 eco-horror Gwen, in Green become a personal favorite, Hugh Zachary's umpteenth novel The Revenant (Onyx, Aug 1988) is a respectable addition to the haunted house pantheon. Unbury Carol Book Review [The Horror Bookshelf] Like a lot of people, the first time I read Malerman’s work was when I stumbled across his debut novel Bird Box. Bird Box is a unique story that follows a woman named Malorie as she attempts to find a safe place to take her two children, five years after the arrival of the mysterious creatures who can drive people to madness with just one glimpse. Reading Bird Box, I was drawn in immediately by his unique take on the post-apocalyptic story and the world building that went into the story. I also know about deep dish pizza and Al Capone, but that's it. It's as much of an American myth as it is a real place for me. It's also a character in Grant Wamack's short novel Black Gypsies. Author Eric Stener Carlson [Official Site] Eric Stener Carlson (Minnesota, 1969) is an author currently based in Geneva, Switzerland. He wrote his first book, "I Remember Julia: Voices of the Disappeared" (Temple University Press, 1996), when he was right out of college. It is based on his work with the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team identifying the remains of people killed by the military dictatorship in the 1970s. After working for the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, he wrote his second book, "The Pear Tree: Is Torture Ever Justified?" (Clarity Press, 2006), a very personal investigation into the use of torture and its moral consequences. Eric became a novelist with the publication of "The Saint Perpetuus Club of Buenos Aires" (Tartarus Press, 2009), a surreal, supernatural mystery. He followed this up with the novel, "Muladona" (Tartarus Press, 2016), "Anxiety of Ghosts" (Amazon, 2017) and his first short story collection, "GAS" (Abraxas Press, 2018). He has a number of other novel projects in the works. His short stories and articles have appeared in journals in the US, UK, Argentina and Spain. Eric holds a BA in International Affairs from The American University, an MA in International Affairs from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He was also a Fulbright scholar affiliated with the University of Buenos Aires. The Storyteller’s The Last Laugh Dear Reader, I’ve had this imagery in my head since 2010, but I was never quite sure how to write it or what it would even be about. The working title was “Visceral” and it originated with a slightly different premise. However, I like this new version much better. David Guenther David Guenther, a Dragon Awards Finalist author, is a proud retired air force senior non-commissioned officer of over twenty one years. He draws from the experience of being deployed or stationed in over two dozen countries when stealing or creating characters for his novels.
