Jorge Machuca was recognized and honored by the government of Puerto Rico on August 30, 2023 in a ceremony at the capital building in San Juan as one of the early pioneers of surfing in Puerto Rico and the 1st to gain international acclaim in the world of surfing. He effectively placed Puerto Rico on the international surfing map while inspiring upcoming generations of Puerto Rican surfers that followed him.
