Experience the breathtaking Moon's Tour
virtual tour of the Moon in all-new 4K resolution, thanks to data provided by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft. As the visualization moves around the near side, far side, north and south poles, we highlight interesting features, sites, and information gathered on the lunar terrain.
In the autumn of 2011, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission initially unveiled its original "Tour of the Moon," a five-minute animation offering a virtual exploration of our closest celestial companion. Six years subsequent to its debut, this tour has been meticulously recreated, now presented in stunning 4K resolution. This reconstruction maintains the identical camera path, harnessing the considerably amplified dataset amassed by LRO during the intervening years.
The tour takes spectators on an engaging odyssey, showcasing a selection of captivating lunar sites meticulously chosen to exemplify a diverse array of terrain characteristics. Some of these locales are situated on the near side of the Moon, familiar to both Earth's amateur and professional observers. In contrast, other sites, primarily visible only from space, provide a unique vantage point. Among the highlighted features, certain sites are notable for their substantial size and antiquity, such as the Orientale and South Pole-Aitken basins. Conversely, there are relatively smaller and more recent features like Tycho and Aristarchus craters. The areas surrounding the lunar poles, perpetually obscured in shadow, pose challenges for direct photography but are amenable to analysis via altimetry. Meanwhile, a selection of the Apollo landing sites, located relatively close to the lunar equator, have been meticulously imaged at extraordinary resolutions, reaching as high as 25 centimeters (10 inches) per pixel.
A particular focus of the new tour is the thorough examination of the mineral composition characterizing the Aristarchus plateau. Additionally, compelling evidence pointing to the presence of surface water ice in specific regions near the Moon's south pole is highlighted. Furthermore, the tour showcases the intricate mapping of gravitational forces in the vicinity of the Orientale basin, shedding light on the Moon's subsurface structure and gravitational anomalies.
This recreated tour, presented in 4K resolution, provides an enhanced and immersive perspective of the Moon's captivating geological features and scientific insights gathered through LRO's extensive and ongoing exploration.
