Can You Build a Chicken Coop for FREE?

How I built this A-frame chicken tractor with free and reclaimed materials. We love using chicken tractors as part of our rotational grazing plan and this mobile coop is lightweight, secure, and most importantly cost us almost nothing to build!

I have become a huge fan of chicken tractors and implementing chickens into our rotational grazing plan. Earlier in the year I built my first chicken tractor for our Cornish Cross meat hens and since then I’ve had meat and layer birds in it. We have, however, outgrown it, and this time I wanted to try to do things a little different than before.

Instead of what I was calling a “modified Suscovich” style tractor this time I wanted to build an A-frame coop. And as an added challenge I wanted to build it from scrap materials we had laying around the farm. Like many woodworkers and hobbyists I tend to collect scrap materials but it is good to use those materials up every now and then and this would be the perfect way to do so.

When all was said and done we used purchased wheels, hinges, latches, and hardware for this project. The hardware cloth had already been purchased and everything else was free or scrap. I’m so happy with how this turned out!
