Frustrated by the slow pace of justice, he dons a bullet-proof chain-mail-like costume made of cellulose material, thanks to the guidance of his mentor, Dr. Franz, a pharmacist and drug-store proprietor.

The Blue Beetle fights crime with a unique calling card, a beetle-shaped marker left at crime scenes to strike fear into the hearts of criminals. He also wields a "Beetle Signal" flashlight, and his reputation as a relentless crime-fighter serves as a formidable weapon. Armed with a revolver, he patrols the streets, wearing a multi-pouched belt and driving the "BeetleMobile" car and "BeetleBird" airplane.
